Abstract
Recent investigations in the southern part of Haida Gwaii (Queen Charl otte Islands, B.C.) demonstrate that this area was occupied prior to 9 000 RCYBP. Archaeological excavation and paleoecological analysis of t wo sites on Arrow Creek and paleoenvironmental analysis of two sedimen t cores collected from adjacent Matheson Inlet show that the sites wer e occupied during a time of rapid sea level change. The oldest archaeo logical remains at these sites date to shortly before 9200 RCYBP and t he youngest to 5650 RCYBP.
