An interactive, student-based approach to the teaching and learning of
evolution at undergraduate level is presented as an alternative to fo
rmal, didactic lectures. The approach involves the students in group w
ork, review of primary sources, museum and conference visits, and aspe
cts of instrumentation design, and is particularly appropriate to clas
ses with mixed backgrounds.
