Abstract
We have measured the Yb 3d photoemission spectra of Yb(Ba0.8Sr0.2)(2)C u3O7, YbF3 and related Yb oxides. For Yb(Ba0.8Sr0.2)(2)Cu3O7 with Yb3 ions, the Yb 3d photoemission spectrum shows a weak satellite due to the 3d(9)4f(14)(L) under bar((L) under bar denotes a ligand hole) fina l state configuration at about 6.5 eV below the main peak. For YbF3, s uch a satellite is not observed.
