Abstract
Magnetic circular dichroism(MCD) of core absorption spectra was measur ed for various transition metal(TM: Mn, Fe, Co) and rare earth (RE: La , Nd, Sm) compounds. The MCD was not only observed for core excitation s of magnetic atoms but also for core excitations of nominally nonmagn etic atoms. Importance of hybridization effects and exchange splitting s of conduction bands is clarified. Limitation of the usual sum rules is demonstrated.
