Abstract
The aim of this clinical trial was to assess the performance of a long stretch bandage in reducing edema and healing venous leg ulcers by co mparing it with the 4 layer bandage. This study was a continuation of previous work already published.(1) Seventy patients were recruited, a nd wound assessments were undertaken weekly with final assessment at 1 2 weeks or upon healing. At each assessment wound healing was monitore d objectively using computerized planimetry from photographs and traci ngs, and edema control was calculated by measuring the limb circumfere nce from the ankle to the knee, then using an established formula.(2) Thirteen wounds healed with the long stretch bandage versus 14 with th e 4 layer bandage; percentage reduction in edema with the long stretch was 7.13 percent versus 9.67 percent with the 4 layer bandage. There was negligible difference in cost of the two compression systems. The study concludes that the two compression bandage systems are comparabl e in performance, safety and cost.
