An experimental program has been carried out to establish specificatio
ns for constituent materials of high-performance concrete (HPC) mixtur
es. Many general recommendations can be found in the bibliography, but
not enough to determine precisely how to specify cements, aggregates,
and admixtures for HPC. Cement has to be selected not only according
to its strength but also its water demand and setting time. Suitable a
ggregates are those with good mechanical properties, controlled by the
Los Angeles coefficient. In addition, water demand of the aggregate m
ust be low, controlled by its absorption and shape coefficient. Also,
a mix proportioning method has been established to proportion HPC mixt
ures for strengths up to 110 MPa.
