P. Puget et al., PARTICULATE ORGANIC-MATTER FRACTIONATION ACCORDING TO ITS LOCATION INSOIL AGGREGATE STRUCTURE, Comptes rendus de l'Academie des sciences. Serie II. Sciences de la terre et des planetes, 322(11), 1996, pp. 965-972
We have developed a method to separate particulate organic matter (POM
) according to its location: outside or inside soil aggregates. Densim
etric fractionation in a dense solution (d=1.6 Mg.m(-3)) was used to s
eparate free POM from water-stable aggregates (POMe). Then, after disp
ersion of the aggregates the occluded POM (POMi) was recovered by flot
ation in water. Application of the method to silty cultivated soils sh
owed that most of the POM and associated carbon occurred as POMi locat
ed within stable macroaggregates.
