Abstract
By adopting the approximations suggested in the theory of thin shells, the hydrodynamic theory of liquid crystals established by J.L. Erikse n [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 4 (1960) 231; Trans. Sec. Rheol., 4 (196 0) 29] and F.M. Leslie [Adv. Liq. Cryst., 4 (1979) 1] is modified so t hat it is applicable to study lipid bilayer membranes.
