I. Ryoo et al., DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF A NEW RTM ALGORITHM FOR VBR TRAFFIC IN ATM NETWORKS, Computer communications, 19(3), 1996, pp. 205-215
This paper presents a new RTM (real-time traffic management) scheme th
at can effectively manage VBR (variable bit rate) traffic having unpre
dictable characteristics in ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networks.
In addition to its precise cell control capability, the proposed sche
me intends to efficiently use the resources of high-speed, high-perfor
mance broadband networks without any deterioration in QoS (quality of
service) of the accepted connections. Specifically, this paper highlig
hts some functions of bandwidth management and connection admission co
ntrol that should be integrated to operate correctly in the emerging A
TM networks. A unique feature of this scheme is that it reports the re
sults of traffic monitoring, which makes it possible to control VBR tr
affic in real-time so that the delay incurred to measure cell arrival
rate in existing algorithms is removed. This property makes the scheme
extremely attractive for supporting most delay-sensitive applications
. Using simulations, the proposed RTM scheme has been verified to reli
ably monitor incoming traffic, manage virtual connections, and reassig
n resources efficiently.
