The linewidth of collective acousticlike modes of liquid and solid (ic
e Ih) water, measured by inelastic x-ray scattering at momentum transf
ers (Q) larger than 2 nm(-1), shows a large increase at the Q values o
f approximate to 7.5 nm(-1). This result, together with previous obser
vations on both acousticlike and opticlike excitations, further emphas
izes the analogies in the whole high-frequency collective dynamics of
liquid and solid H2O, and challenges our present understanding of thes
e dynamical phenomena.
