To practice evidence-based medicine, physicians need data on the clini
cal effectiveness, toxicity, convenience, and cost of new drugs compar
ed with available alternatives. We give examples of published drug stu
dies that are defective, sometimes because pharmaceutical industry fun
ding has affected their content and quality. We make recommendations o
n how to avoid these defects.
