Abstract
We discuss the temporal variation of the equation of state of a classi cal string network, evolving in a background in which the Hubble radiu s H-1 changes with time. We also discribe a method to look for self-co nsistent non-vacuum string backgrounds, corresponding to the simultane ous solution of the gravi-dilaton background equations and of the stri ng equations of motion.
