Abstract
A review of recent progress in string theory coupled to massive backgr ound fields is given. The problems of formulation are discussed. The g eneral renormalization structure of bosonic string theory in backgroun d fields of massive modes is studied. Linear approximation in open str ing theory in background fields of first massive modes is investigated .
