Abstract
The paper discusses general questions of friction and wear from the po int of material sensitivity in AFM studies. The depth of generated gro oves after scanning under high load proved a tool of material characte rization. The erosion depth was found to sensitively depend on the sca nning speed. A model for quantitative discussion of this phenomenon is presented, which also explains the relation between external load and lateral friction force.
