H. Takahashi et al., A NOVEL EXTRACTION METHOD FOR FULLERENES OVER C-90 IN LARGE QUANTITIES USING HYDROTHERMAL TREATMENT, Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 217, 1996, pp. 42-45
In this paper, a novel method called Hydrothermally Initiated Dynamic
Extractions (HIDE) is proposed for the extraction of fullerenes over C
-90. In this method, the soot is hydrothermally treated prior to the e
xtraction by organic solvent. The HIDE treatment provides comminution
in a microscopic scale as a result of collision between the soot parti
cles and the water molecules and initiates weakening and breaking of t
he bonds between the fullerenes and the soot. The fullerenes thus free
d from the soot are extracted easily in the toluene Soxhlet extraction
. The merits of the HDE method are that water neither dissolves fuller
enes nor produces any by-products and the extraction efficiency of ful
lerenes over C-60 is greatly increased compared with the conventional
method.
