Abstract
Two statistical methods of forecasting the total ozone (TO) behaviour for a month ahead are suggested on the basis of the Karhunen-Loeve (K- L) approximation. A determining role of an appropriate selection of th e basic K-L functions is demonstrated. The efficiency of the predictor approximation is shown to be indicative of the successfulness of a TO forecast. Average skill-score of an intra-monthly TO forecast counts about 80%.
