An improved procedure of the dynamic stiffness method is proposed in t
his paper. In the procedure, a one-dimensional substructure can be red
uced to an equivalent element. In this way, the dimension of the globa
l matrix is reduced greatly. In addition, a beam-like structure may be
modeled with arbitrarily selected degrees of freedom. The application
of the method to model reduction, evaluations of modal parameters, ca
lculation of forced responses and identification of dynamic forces are
discussed.
