U. Hossfeld, COPEPODEN - A TEST OBJECT OF CLASSICAL CY TOGENETICS AT THE BEGINNINGOF THE 20TH-CENTURY, Biologisches Zentralblatt, 115(2-3), 1996, pp. 91-103
During the first decades of the twentieth century the research on cope
pods raised great biological interest in Germany. The special merit of
the zoologist and geneticist VALENTIN HAECKER (1864-1927) and his pup
ils was to focus again on these animals in scientific research. In num
erous publications they presented their results about reduction, group
ing, conjugation of chromosomes and especially, about zytology and mor
phology of the cope pods. Research on copepods united the arguments of
WEISMANN and MENDELian genetics. This research also has shown that co
pepods display the same genetic and cytological phenomena as the class
ical research objekt Ascaris megalocephala bivalens.
