Abstract
Periodic (4-monthly) surveillance of pig herds for antibodies against swine vesicular disease (SVD) is obligatory in the Netherlands since 1 993. Samples should be collected 'at random' in as many compartments a s possible, with a maximum of one pig per pen. This prerequisite for a sensitive surveillance will be elucidated using four examples of SVD outbreaks in the Netherlands.
