The present investigation is a systematic study of the X-ray photoelec
tron spectroscopy ''ESCA'' of CrO3 and its suboxides, CrO2.88, CrO2.67
, CrO2.51, CrO2.46, CrO2.41, CrO1.98 and CrO1.5. The main peaks locate
d at 581-574 eV and at 590-583 eV are for Cr2p(3/2) and Cr2p(1/2) resp
ectively. The change of binding energy of the Cr2p electrons of the in
vestigated samples are attributed to the variation of the partial ioni
c character of the Cr-O bond, of the crystal structure, and of the oxi
dation state, Cr6+ to Cr3+, of the chromium ions.
