Stages 1-3 ICl-graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) are prepared fr
om natural graphite flakes and graphitized polyimide films by an ordin
ary two-bulb method. The stage structures are studied by X-ray diffrac
tion, and the Debye-Waller(DW) factors are determined by minimizing th
e crystallographic R factor. The effective DW factors of stage 1-3 ICl
-GICs from natural graphite flakes decrease with increasing stage numb
er, indicating that the stiffness of the GICs along the c-axis increas
es with increasing stage number. The effective DW factor of the stage
1 ICl-GIC from graphitized polyimide film is smaller than that from na
tural graphite flakes. The DW factors of the respective carbon, iodine
and chlorine atoms in the ICl-GICs are also determined.
