Abstract
Hedwigia stellata Hedenas and H. detonsa (Howe) Buck 8 Norris, comb. n ov., are recognized from the West Coast of North America, Hedwigia ste llata may be recognized by strongly spreading leaf apices, unipapillos e laminal cells, and a pointed terminal leaf cell. In North America it ranges from southern California, U.S.A. to the Queen Charlotte Island s of British Columbia, Canada. Hedwigia detonsa is much like H. stella ta microscopically, but does not have spreading leaf apices, and is di stinctive in the eciliate perichaetial leaves. It appears to be endemi c to California. Both species are described and mapped, and habit phot ographs and SEM photomicrographs of the laminal cells are provided. Ma terial of Hedwigia from Latin America and elsewhere in Gondwanic areas is probably also distinct from H. ciliata and may be separated as H. nivalis (C. Mull.) Mitt.
