Specimens representing a new species of the green algal genus Verdigel
las, are described from deep-water collections made using the submersi
ble DSV NEKTON GAMMA in the Bahamas. Verdigellas nektongammea forms er
ect and spreading irregular palmate lobes, up to 2.0 cm in height and
4.0 cm across. The new species is unique among benthic marine Tetraspo
rales in possessing vegetative cells arranged in reticulate mucilagino
us strands internally, resulting in numerous hollow cavities.
