Thiophosphorus tri-N-methylimide, P4S4N6(CH3)(6), was prepared in high
yield by the reaction of elemental sulfur and solid P4N6(CH3)(6) at r
oom temperature. Physical properties support a structure analogous to
the cage structure for P4O6S4. Additional properties of the related co
mpounds, P4N6(CH3)(6) and As4N6(CH3)(6), are reported. Comparison of p
roton n.m.r. spectra and mass spectral cracking patterns substantiates
a common structural basis for these molecules.
