Abstract
Terfenol-D (Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe2) has a giant magnetostrictive effect with a saturation strain of 1.1 x 10(-3). Possible structural changes due to an applied magnetic field and as a function of temperature are examine d by a polarization-dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure study at two temperatures above and below the spin reorientation temp erature, T-s = 10 degrees C, at two applied magnetic fields, B = 0 and 5.5 kG, and at two edges, the Fe K edge and the Dy L(III) edge. To wi thin +/- 0.003 Angstrom (1 Angstrom = 10(-10) m) no internal distortio n of the unit cell was observed.
