Eight highly oxygenated flavones, including one new compound, were iso
lated from the leaves of an Indonesian medicinal plant, Murraya panicu
lata. Seven of them were identified as 5-hydroxy-6,7,8,3',4',5'-hexame
thoxyflavone (gardenin A), 5,3'-dihydroxy-6,7,8,4',5'-pentamethoxyflav
one (gardenin C), 6,7,8,4'-tetramethoxy-5,3',5'-trihydroxyflavone (gar
denin E), 5-hydroxy-6,7,8,3',4'-pentamethoxyflavone (5-O-desmethylnobi
letin), 6,7,8,3',4',5'-hexamethoxyflavone, 5-hydroxy-6,7,3',4',5'-pent
amethoxyflavone (umhengerin), 5,3'-dihydroxy-6,7,4',5'-tetramethoxyfla
vone either by direct comparison with authentic samples or by comparin
g their melting points and spectroscopic data with those reported in t
he literature. The new compound was elucidated as 5,3',5/-trihydroxy-6
,7,4'-trimethoxyflavone on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic stu
dies.
