H. Keller et al., OXIDATION PROTECTION OF MAGNETIC IRON PARTICLES BY ULTRATHIN LAYERS OF SILANES, Journal of magnetism and magnetic materials, 155(1-3), 1996, pp. 101-103
Trimethoxysilanes with long alkyl chains (C12-C18) and tetramethoxysil
ane are adsorbed on iron pigments. The silane molecules adsorb strongl
y to the iron pigments and form ultrathin layers on the surface. Upon
exposure to hot and humid atmosphere, these layers reduce the loss of
magnetization from 6.3 nT m(3) g(-1) down to approximately 1.1 nT m(3)
g(-1). The loss of magnetization decreases with increasing layer thic
kness. The best oxidation protection is found for tetramethoxysilane.
