The UNIQUAC functional-group activity coefficient (UNIFAC) method was
used to estimate sorption of flavor-like compounds by packaging polyme
rs. D-limonene and ethanol were used as the representative paver-like
organic compounds. Packaging polymers used in the tests were low-densi
ty polyethylene (LDPE), ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), and polypropyle
ne (PP). Experimental equilibrium sorption values were measured at 25,
40, 55, and 70 degrees C. The comparison between the experimental and
calculated values indicate the UNIFAC model to be much more accurate
in sorption predictions than the regular solution theory and the Flory
-Huggins equation.
