Abstract
A dynamic probabilistic simulation model of Jalvingh et al. (1992) was expanded to support strategic planning for housing facilities for sow s. The model uses the Markov Chain approach to simulate herd dynamics. The model can calculate the flow of animals through the facilities an d the occupation of the facilities for individual farm conditions. The model can also calculate the sensitivity of housing capacity needed f or changing herd management strategies and herd performance levels. Th e calculations can be used for farm-specific advice on the capacity ne eded, design, and use of housing facilities for sows. Data on the flow of animals through the facilities allow calculation of labor requirem ents for animal transfer.
