Abstract
Photochemical degradation of 3.3'- and 4,4'-dimethylbiphenyls was stud ied in natural seawater, without photosensitizer and under artificial UV irradiation. The photooxidation process takes place mainly on benze ne ring side chains. Photoproduct analysis, carried out by GC-MS, FTIR and GC-FTIR confirm three successive oxidation stares of methyl subst ituents : alcohol, aldehyde and carboxylic acids.
