Abstract
An analysis of the horizontal structure of sea level pressure fields a nd 500 hPa height fields based on a series of numerical experiments wa s performed with a complicated atmospheric general circulation model. A quantitative comparison between climatic and actual monthly mean fie lds for transition seasons,is given. The accuracy of reproduced contra sts spring/fall, as well as March/May, September/November, March/Novem ber, and May/September is considered. The determining mechanisms of th ese contrasts in the annular climate cycle are evaluated.
