The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) is a self applied instru
ment that describes personality according to Cloninger's pschobiologic
al model. Cloninger's models are based in the observation of the anima
l response and conduct towards stimuli. Temperament is described as hi
ghly heritable and stable through life. It is divided in to four dimen
sions: novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence and persiste
nce. Character is described as being determined by the individual's su
rrounding and is modifiable through life. It is divided in to three di
mensions: self-directedness, cooperativeness and self-transcendence. T
he present work shows the translation and standardization of the TCI t
o Spanish for a population based sample of 269 subjects from both sexe
s and older than 18 years old. Mean, standard deviations and the inter
nal consistency values of the translated version are similar to the on
es reported from the original. It is concluded that spite of the obvio
us cultural differences the instrument sustained the consistency claim
ed by its authors.
