Impulsivity is a personality feature that has been associated with sev
eral mental disorders; diverse instruments have been developed to asse
ss this trait. The aim of this work is to determine the internal consi
stency and factor structure of the Spanish version of the Plutchik's i
mpulsivity scale. Patients were recruited from 2 different samples. on
es from the mentally dirodered offenders canfined at the Reclusorio Pr
eventivo Sur (South Preventive Penitentiary) in Mexico City, and the o
ther from the psychiatric population from the ''Fray Bernardino Alvare
z'' Psychiatric Hospital. All subjects received the Plutchik's impulsi
vity scale, and their demographic data were collected. A total of 165
subjects were included in the analysis. The Cronbach's alpha of the sc
ale was 0.61, which increased to 0,67, excluding one of the items. The
factor analysis discriminated 4 item groups which were named as follo
ws, according to the theoretical framework: a) selfcontroll b) planing
of future action, c) physiological behaviors and d) spontaneous behav
ior. We conclude that de Spanish version of the Plutchik's impulsivity
scale behaved in a comparable way with the original instrument and th
at it may be used poor clinical research.
