J. Schumacher et al., REMOVAL OF THE PREMAXILLAE AND ROSTRAL PORTIONS OF THE MAXILLAE OF A HORSE, Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 209(1), 1996, pp. 118-119
Diseased premaxillae of horses can be exposed by creating and reflecti
ng labial and palatal mucoperiosteal flaps and removed using obstetric
al wire. Labial and palatal flaps can be apposed to achieve healing by
primary intention. Despite loss of the premaxillae, horses can be exp
ected to be able to prehend hay and long grass without difficulty. Fac
ial appearance of horses treated by removal of the premaxillae is near
ly normal.
