Surprising results of measurements of the interfacial fracture toughne
ss of the interface made from otherwise brittle materials is merely an
other impetus for think over restrictions of the nonlinear fracture me
chanics. With respect to the extensive energy dissipation Rie are of t
he opinion that in the nonlinear fracture mechanics it is no longer po
ssible to ignore the second law of thermodynamics. Its proper applicat
ion can, in our opinion, quantitatively explain the behaviour of the c
rack in different systems exposed to different conditions by virtue of
the influence of dissipation processes.
