Abstract
The time-averaged inversion of atoms pumping a one-atom maser is recon sidered. Consistent with a recent study, we find that its value is typ ically negative if the coupling is to a TM mode of the resonator. A si mple explanation for this fact is offered. Further, we observe that a positive value is typical when the atoms couple to a TE mode.
