Abstract
Backman and Finnegan [1] have pointed out that shear bands initiate fr om a defect such as a second phase particle, microcrack, or a void. Th e defect has been modeled as a sinusoidal variation in the thickness o f the tubular specimens tested in torsion by Chi [2] and Murphy [3]. H ere we simulate their torsional tests numerically and consider differe nt shapes and sizes of defects.
