Eighteen strains of Leishmania infantum were found in 8,329 phlebotomi
ne sandflies dissected during two surveys in the Priorat region (Catal
onia, Spain). Three zymodemes were isolated and typed by isoenzyme ana
lysis, namely MON-1 from four Phlebotomus ariasi and one P. perniciosu
s, MON-29 from seven P. ariasi and five P. perniciosus and MON-77 from
one P. perniciosus. A fourth zymodeme (MON-105) was isolated from a l
aboratory bred sandfly (P. perniciosus which was permitted to feed on
a leishmanial dog from which three zymodemes (MON-1), MON-77 and MON-1
05) had previously been cultured.
