Over more than the past four decades, Ewald Wicke has been both a dire
ct and indirect dominant personality within the overall area of resear
ch of hydrogen in metals, including in particular the fields of study
involved with hydrogen in palladium and palladium alloys. Professor Wi
cke's influence stemmed in particular from extensive contributions, to
gether with his group, to the central research areas of phase relation
ships and hydrogen isotope diffusion. Also very important have been hi
s editorial influences in regard to conference arrangements and public
ations of proceedings. The present article is a revision of a contribu
tion to a group of articles prepared for presentation to Professor Wic
ke in Munster in October 1994 on the occasion of his eightieth birthda
y. Copyright (C) 1996 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.
