Abstract
This document deals with the terminology in relation to the preparatio n and characterization of liquid and solid thin films and layers, It i s not comprehensive, in that no consideration is given to certain type s of layers such as ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, He or liquid metal f ilms, Topics covered include: general terminology and characterization methods applicable to both solid and liquid films; terminology and ch aracterization methods applicable specifically to either liquid or sol id films, layers and multilayers. Comprehensive indexes of terms and m ethodologies (preparation and characterization) are given.
