In this article we discuss the progress made in understanding intramol
ecular and intermolecular reactions of proton (or hydrogen-atom) trans
fer. Femtosecond real-time probing, together with spectroscopic studie
s, in molecular beams are presented with selected examples of reaction
s. Reaction rates, tunneling dynamics and the nature of the reaction c
oordinate are examined and related to two-state multidimensional poten
tial energy surfaces.
