A formulation is derived by which the light scattered from an irregula
r particle behind a plane interface can be found. The only knowledge r
equired of the particle is its scattering coefficients when the plane
interface is not present. It is sufficiently general that the particle
can be composed of inhomogeneous media or of multiple subparticles. T
he solution is derived by expanding the fields in terms of vector sphe
rical harmonics and translating them between the coordinate systems of
the particle and the image particle. In this way, the boundary condit
ions on both the particle and the plane interface can be satisfied. Sc
attering curves from small spheroids behind an interface are used to i
llustrate the theory.
