Y. Kudoh, PROPERTIES OF POLYPYRROLE PREPARED BY CHEMICAL POLYMERIZATION USING AQUEOUS-SOLUTION CONTAINING FE-2(SO4)(3) AND ANIONIC SURFACTANT, Synthetic metals, 79(1), 1996, pp. 17-22
This study deals with polypyrrole (PPy) prepared with an aqueous solut
ion. The combinations of Fe-2(SO4)(3) as an oxidant and anionic surfac
tants, such as sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, sodium alkylnaphthalene
sulfonate and sodium alkylsulfonate, brought about enhanced conductivi
ty as well as increased yield of the resultant PPy. These phenomena re
sulted from the large-sized surfactant anions being predominantly inco
rporated into the PPy backbone. Furthermore, the addition of surfactan
ts accelerated the polymerization reactions. This seemed to derive fro
m an insoluble product temporarily being formed from Fe-2(SO4)(3) and
the surfactant functions being innumerable initial points of the polym
erization reactions. PPy prepared with surfactants also showed high th
ermal and moisture stabilities in air at 125 degrees C, and at 85 degr
ees C and 85% RH.
