Abstract
The phylogenetic compositions of bacterioplankton assemblages from San Francisco Bay and Tomales Bay, Calif., differed substantially when an alyzed by PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis; these differenc es are consistent with the results of previous studies demonstrating d ifferences in their metabolic capabilities. PCR-denaturing gradient ge l electrophoresis analysis of complex microbial assemblages was sensit ive and reliable, and the results were reproducible as shown by experi ments with constructed and naturally occurring assemblages.
