Oxygen-induced missing row type reconstruction on Mo(001) surface has
been studied by STM. The formation mechanism of missing row reconstruc
tion was deduced from the observations of (1 x 1)+(2 x 1) and (2 x 1)
surfaces. Oxygen was observed to displace Mo atoms from terraces to fo
rm missing rows. Domains of (2 x 1) structure along two perpendicular
directions were formed.
