Products formed by combustion of mixed waste plastics under standard c
onditions were identified and quantitatively determined by combination
of two methods: (a) GC of gaseous products on a 30 m x 0.53 mm quart
capillary column wall-coated with chemically bound phase RSL 200 at 60
degrees C, N-2 carrier gas, FID; (b) GC/MS of freeze-trapped products
extracted with isohexane and separated on a 30 m x 0.25 wall-coated c
apillary column at 60-250 degrees C (4 K.min(-1)), He carrier gas, wit
h MS detection using electron-impact ionization (70 eV), ionization cu
rrent 10 mA, and 1 s scan in mass interval 50-450 m.z(-1). In additon
to saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, the following irritants and
toxic compounds were identified: acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, benza
ldehyde, styrene, phenol, and benzoylisothiocyanate.
