Pc. Silva, TAXONOMIC AND NOMENCLATURAL STATUS OF TROCHISCIA KUTZING AND TROCHISCIA-MONILIFORMIS MONTAGNE, Cryptogamie. Algologie, 17(2), 1996, pp. 69-75
Trochiscia moniliformis Montagne (1838) was published as a marine spec
ies of the freshwater genus Trochiscia Kutzing (1834). Accrediting Mon
tagne with having established a genus of diatoms bearing the name Troc
hiscia is erroneous. The genus Podosira Ehrenberg (1840) is based on T
. moniliformis. The correct name of this species is P. hormoides (Mont
agne) Kutzing. The current treatment of Trochiscia as a genus of chlor
ococcalean algae is supposedly based on Kutzing's second use of the na
me (1845), but none of the four original species is identifiable. Ther
efore, the name should be rejected not only because it is a later homo
nym, but because its taxonomic application is uncertain. The name Gloc
hiococcus De Toni (1888) is available for certain species originally a
ssigned to Acanthococcus Lagerheim (1883) (not Acanthococcus Hooker f.
& Harvey 1845 in the rhodophycean family Cystocloniaceae) and subsequ
ently transferred to Trochiscia.
