Carbon-carbon composites (CCC) belong to the family of advanced compos
ites. They are composed of a fibrous carbon reinforcement, a carbonace
ous or graphitic matrix, and sometimes a filler or coating to impart s
pecialized properties. The CCC materials provide a wide range of prope
rties, which have been found useful in aerospace, defense, frictional,
industrial, scientific, and other fields. CCC materials have evolved
rapidly over the past three and a half decades. Documentation of progr
ess in open literature however, has been limited and widely scattered.
With the aid of the international materials community, over 1,400 CCC
events have been recorded. These data have provided a historical pers
pective, but, in addition, they have provided the basis for a look at
future developments and applications.
