A laboratory study was conducted to identify the key properties of pho
sphinocarboxylic acid polymers in controlling boiler water deposits, i
ncluding their ability to transport iron; disperse boiler water sludge
containing iron oxide, silica, and calcium phosphate; and dissolve de
posits. The thermal and hydrolytic stability of the polymers was inves
tigated in autoclave studies up to 1,500 psig, Performance testing sho
wed their inherent thermal stability makes phosphinocarboxylic acid po
lymers effective in maintaining deposit control in a boiler.
