Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of acoustic doppler curre
nt profiler data is used to provide a physical justification for the u
se of eigenfunctions derived from simple vertical eddy viscosity profi
les in the Galerkin method of three-dimensional, tidal current modelli
ng in a homogenous sea region. A good fit of EOF modes to eigenfunctio
ns derived from a simple parameterized vertical eddy viscosity profile
is obtained. An empirical determination of the most appropriate expre
ssion for the temporal dependence of such vertical eddy viscosity prof
iles is also given. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
